Automatic coding is available to 3KA private package users. Automatic coding for open-ended questions can be activated in the 'DATA' – 'Computations' – 'Automatic coding' tab. Select a text variable you wish to automatically encode from the dropdown menu and click the 'Run' button.
Automatic coding is suitable for short answers, where words or word roots are frequently repeated. The application identifies individual word roots and unites them into a common value. You have the option of encoding variables with one of the multiple possible values. When encoding multiple values for an answer (i.e. multiple-choice questions), a comma is used as a delimiter (separator symbol). We do not recommend automatic encoding for long open-ended questions.
Automatically encoded variables can be altered manually in the 'DATA' - 'Computations' - Manual coding' tab.
